We Will Not Concede to the Trustee Coup on Municipalities

img_20151116_152354.jpgOn the morning of Eid al-Adha Eve, the political administration has raided 28 municipalities, stating to have “seized power” through trustees, which is reminiscent of 12 September 1980 coup d’etat from 30 years ago.

There is no difference between the mentality  that bombards the Parliament, the elected public will and the mentality that storms into the municipalities shouting to have “seized power” in a usurpation of the local public will.

We reiterate that the regulation enabling assignments of trustees over municipalities, brought through Decree with the Power of Law, by the AKP administration and Erdoğan violates multiple Constitutional clauses, democratic international agreements signed by Turkey, including the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Charter of Local Self Government, the universal law and fundamental human rights. Torture and Long Detainment Periods Cannot Be Accepted

ayseltugluk

In a political climate where those who do not submit to the government are announced as traitors alongside the coupists, torture is openly displayed without the need to hide.  The proud display of torture attests to the state’s entry into the extralegal realm and serves no purpose other than routinization of state violence in Turkey, in whose prisons torture and ill treatment reports never come to end.

The photographs and video footage showing physically abused people in print and visual media after the putting down of July 15 coup attempt was a clear sign of this process. Continue reading

The Way Out of This Crisis is not Declaring State of Emergency, but Democracy

img_20151116_152354.jpgFive days after the coup attempt on 15th of July, the NSC and Council of Ministers declared a state of emergency in the country. This step shows the coup attempt might have been blocked, but the desire to rule the country with coup-like, authoritative mentality is not.
In this period Turkey will be ruled by Decree-laws against the constitution, the Council of Ministers will be chaired by the President, the jurisdiction of governors will be increased, and vital universal and democratic human rights will be violated while the Turkish Presidential System will be imposed without restraint. Thus, the coup attempt has become a tool and opportunity for the government to purge all opposition and limit democratic rights and freedom.
