Öcalan had warned Erdogan about this matter a lot. “Tell him, he does not get it, he is acting like an idiot” Öcalan said. “By continuing the resolution process I supported him, if this process ends, the mechanics of coup would step in and he would end up just like Morsi of Egypt” he constantly warned.

Selahattin Demirtaş, co-chair of Peoples’ Democratic Party, defined the attempted coup as “the coup attempt of putchists against putchists” and added: “A clear attitude must be adopted against both pro-coup mindsets and the struggle must be stepped up because the coup mindset that tried to seize power through military forces using tanks and cannons is illegitimate and so is ruling the society through an election that takes place with war, violence, and bombing of the cities, it also is a civil coup.” Continue reading

Civilian deaths in sieges imposed by the security forces

The first of these sieges, described as “curfews,” was imposed in Varto, starting on 16 August. There are sieges still in course in Cizre, Silopi and Sur districts. “Curfews” have been declared 56 times in 20 districts of 7 cities and so far these “curfews” have totaled 271 days.  In some districts where curfews have been officially lifted, there is still a de facto siege. In the course of armed conflict that restarted in the Kurdish region of Turkey after general elections in June 2015, 186 civilians most of which are women or children have died so far, hundreds of them were injured and thousands of people were arrested. Concerning co-mayors who are members of our union, 17 of them are now arrested while 25 of them were suspended from their duty and 6 of them were issued arrest warrants since July 2015. In order to end human rights violations in our region, there is an urgent need for revitalizing peace talks for resolution of Kurdish question in Turkey. Continue reading

The Election Manifesto of the Peoples’ Democratic Party’s (HDP) published by HDP Headquarters has been banned by Ağrı Penal Court of Peace. The aim of the court decision is to criminalize our demand for administrative self-rule based on decentralization of Turkey. Civilian Losses and Assaults at HDP Offices in Numbers (Law Commission Report 17 June-26 August)

Following the 7 June elections, in the time period between 17 June- 26 August 2015, 78 civilians have lost their lives. Furthermore, between 4-19 August, there have been 9 assaults directed at HDP offices. In the custody operations that started after the 7 June elections, 1.628 people have been taken into custody and 298 people have been arrested as of 26 August 2015. Continue reading
